TO LISTEN TO GEORGE JONE'S 50,000 NAMES ON THE WALL
MACV-SOG
I feel very privileged to have been associated with these brave men, some my friends and all my brother, I wish I had been standing and fighting with each one of them, to bring them home, I wasn't, and I grieve for each. Hopefully, I did contribute in some small way with my service with SOG!-Bill O'Rourke-paraphrase

THE BELOW ARE INDICATED AS BEING WITH SOG AT THE TIME OF THEIR DEATHS, HOWEVER AT THIS TIME DATA SHOWS THEY WERE NOT.
1964 SFC Harold G. Bennett, MACVSOG OPS 34, Agent Drop. This is in error, further research shows he was an advisor to a Ranger ARVN unit operating in Phuoc Tuy Province, SVN.
1967 1 22 E-6 SSG Rowland E. Gibson 91B4S KIA Cam; CCC, RT Indiana; small arms fire his SS award citation states he was with Det A-352
1967 03 02 1Lt Casimir Niespodziany, 31542, KIA'ed 5th MSF Bao Loc VN in support of 1st Bde, 101st Abn Division, a command-detonated artillery round was dischared by the enemy killing him and 3 other.
1967 8 3 O-3 CPT Arthur H. Green 31542 KIA, DWM SVN; A-245, Dak Seang, Kontum Prov., same ambush w/ he has been reported as being with B-50; however, SFC Wickliffe is not,, but both were KIA'ed together at A-245.
1968 1 4 E-4 SP4 Ronald R. Watson 11B2S KIA Laos; CCN, FOB4, RT Intruder, w/ Villarosa (note: Villarosa was the only American that was killed on that mission, the other 2 Americans on that team were rescued. He was assigned to 1st Inf Division
1968 1 4 E-2 PVT Frank O. Taboada 71B3P?? KIA SVN; B-36, A-362, Rapid Fire V, Tay Ninh Prov., XT113964, 15km north of A-323 Thien Ngon his assignment was A-361 (1Bn 3MSFG) 5th SFGA, However it is said he could have been with B56 or CCN. He was killed in Tay Ninh Province which at the very South of the country so he could not have been with CCN nor do I suspect with B56.
1968 8 24 O-2 1LT John E. Miller 9305 KIA, DOW SVN; CCN, FOB4, Quang Ngai Prov., Attack on FOB4 (wounded the night before and DOW) he was assigned to HHC, 6th PSY OPS BN
1969 3 18 E-7 SFC Margarito Fernandez, Jr. 11F4S KIA, DOW Cam; CCS, w/ RT??, XT441912, during BDA 11km due East of A-322, Katum; w/ B. Murphy on page 3 of the July 1969 issue of the Green Beret Magazine, he is listed as "Died of Wounds" as opposed to "Killed Hostile Action" thus, he was wounded at an earlier time and died of his injuries so he might have been wounded days before the 18th. He was assigned to Co D, Det B-41 KIA Moc Hoa,Chau Doc Province,South Vietnam and not SOG.
1969 3 26 LTC Frank A. Difiglia, Pilot; TSGT Jesse C. Bowman crewchief; gunner SGT Antonio L. Alho Gunner; COL Donald G. Lepard; COL JBL Levesque; CAPT Walter C. Booth; CAPT Robert W. Field; a UH-1F (tail number 63-13158) from the 20th Special Operations Squadron (20th SOS) “Green Hornets,” operating out of Ban Me Thuot East Airfield, crashed and burned near D?c My, north of Nha Trang, South Vietnam. Because 3 of these men were aircrew and the other 4 were passengers, it does not appear to have been on a SOG mission for Op35. The 20th SOS were perhaps on a SOG air ops mission. I have decided not to include them in the above alpha roster who were providing direct support of an ops3 mission when they lost their lives. These men are referenced in LTC Fred Lindsey's book, page 12, Secret Green Beret Commandos In Cambodia as providing SOG Support when they perished.

Apr 68-George N. Deverall
Cpt,
the Narrative/Statement by SSGT Patrick N.
Watkins on the events this date posted below the deaths of (Bryan,
Cardosa, Padgett and Wilcos) which
clearly states he was on this helicopter which crashed.)
Virtual Wall has George Deverall assigned to A-235, 5th SFGA AND KIA'ED GROUND
ACTION GUN OR SMALL ARMS.(Assuming he was a new arrival to FOB4, his records
may have not been updated at the time he was killed, however, he could not
have been a new arrival as he was alleged to be a Recon Team Leader, that
means he had ran several missions and gained some experience. He is also not
listed in Steve Sherman's Who's Who from Macvsog. Had he been on that
aircraft, his death would have been recorded as Died-Non Hostile. Until futher
information to the contrary, he will not be included in SOG data) 1969 5 23 E-6 SSG Rudolph G. Machata 11F4S KIA, helicopter crash Cam; CCS, RT Saw, w/ Strout & Hill; 155 AHC #68-15392 75 miles inside Cambodia near Route 13. Correction: He was killed while he was assigned to Det A-244, B Co, 5th SFGA. He was hitching a ride on a Command and Control helicopter of the 157 AHC, when an enemy mortar exploded as he was ready to board killing him. It is noted that he was awarded a Purple Heart on 11/14/68 while a member of CCN, A search of assignments of CCN, C&C, FOBs 1,3, and 4 does not reflect him being assigned for the action of 11/14/68, nor does CCS or any element classified under CCS. On page 329, Secret Green Beret Commandos in Cambodia by LTC Fred Lindsey, USA (RET) shows him being killed as a chase Medic, but nothing else. Thus, he was a member of SOG for the PH award, but not when he was Killed.
1969 5 29 E-6 Sinclair, Lee E. 5th SFGA Recondo School in Nha Trang reportedly in a night defensive position in Khanh Hoa Province, RVN, when a white phosphorous grenade was accidentally detonated
1969 8 19 O-3 CPT Robert M. Nelson 31542 DNH, fixed wing crash Laos; unit UNK, was he Project 404??, loss locaton UNK, SFOC Grad Class 2E-F8, 3-67, 30 June 1967 Robert M. Nelson is listed in the Virtual Vietnam Memorial as being an ASST ARMY ATTACHE, AMEMBASSY LAOS-for our purposes, he is not SOG.
1970 3 13 Thomas P O'Neill SSG E6 listed as assigned to Security as a Security NCO with Maritime Studies Group (OP70), from futher research it does not appear he was with SOG. He served as an infantry unit leader and was assigned to USMC ADV UNIT, NAVAL ADV GROUP. He was Killed by Friendly fire during an ambush for a Tax Collector. He served as an Infantry Unit Leader and was assigned to USMC ADV UNIT, NAVAL ADV GROUP. ,
1969 21 O-3 CPT Nathaniel Jackson, Jr. 31542 DNH, drowned/suffocated SVN; Det A-442 (not CCN, RT Moccasin), Kien Giang Prov. 21 Sep 69 Jackson, Nathaniel, Cpt, RT Moccasin, CCN, drowned SVN. The Virtual wall has him as being assigned to DET A-442 (TO CHAU), D CO, 5TH SF GROUP. Note: He is listed as being assigned to RT Moccaisn; however, on this same date, RT Moccasin was out on a mission in Laos and on this date Alan B. Cecil was killed in action NW of Khe Sanh, but Jackson drowned in Kien Glang province. Det A-422 was located in the extreme Southwest next to the Gulf of Thailand along the Cambodian Borer. CCN was located in the northern part of Vietnam, Quang Nam Province and Kien Glang Province is located in the extreme South of Vietnam--Conclusion. Cpt Jackson can be presumed as not being with CCN when he was killed.
1971 1 17 E-6 SSG Perry M. Smith
71L4S DNH SVN; 5 SFG, HQ, A&D Section, Khanh Hoa Prov.he is recorded in two publications
as being assigned to Fob1 CCS and Killed in Action, which in error as he was
not assigned to Fob1 CCS, but to Hq, 5th A&D section.
coffeltdatabase.org provides the following: SSGT
Perry M. Smith was a Special Forces-qualified administrative specialist
serving with Headquarters Company, 5th Special Forces Group. On hid death as "Non-hostile, died of other causes". If you have any information indicating they were in fact with SOG, please send me info to [email protected] |

A Note on Sources
The above named losses and narratives are complied from various documents, books, Official Records, and personal accounts. Some of the sources include SOG "MACV Studies and Observations Group" 5 Volume books by the late Harve Saal; Who's Who in MACVSOG by Steve Sherman; SOG The Secret Wars of American's Commandos in Vietnam by John Plaster; Reflections of a Warrior by Frank Miller; Vietnam Magazine; Green Beret Magazines; Green Berets at War, U.S. Special Forces in Southeast Asia 1956-1975, by Shelby L. Stanton; SFAHQ website, Special Forces Honor Roll, Internet websites; Telephone calls, email, and stories from Helicopter pilots/crews supporting SOG operations; individual SOG members; and family members; as well as my personal memory. the Virtual Vietnam Memorial Wall and another website I can find that has information. Anyone with any additions or corrections please contact me so that the below memorial can be updated. NOTE: There are errors abound and many sources have been crossed referenced to eliminate these errors.
The following quote is extracted from Maj John Plaster's Book: SOG, The Secret Wars of American Commandos in Vietnam and reflects both the intelligence gathering aspects of a reconnaissance mission to gather intelligence data and the ability of that soldier to fight:
"I looked up at the bunker in front of me and saw a khaki-uniformed NVA with a pith helmet, chest web gear, green Bata boots and an AK, Type 56, and no other identifying insignia. Then I shot him." -- Sgt Tony "Fast Eddie" Anderson, RT Kansas, 1971
As I worked on this project, many times I had to stop, my heart filled with pride, a lump in my throat, emotional pain filling my soul, bringing tears to my eyes. Always, avoiding the gazes of those who might come around so they would not know. Then I ran across a passage in John Plaster's book which says it all contributed to Bill O'Rourke when he was speaking of Mad Dog Shriver, I'll paraphrase it to fit the feeling of all our SOG brothers: I feel very privileged to have been associated with these brave men, some my friends and all my brother, I wish I had been standing and fighting with each one of them, to bring them home, I wasn't, and I grieve for each. Hopefully, I did contribute in some small way with my service with SOG!
